RESEARCH ZONE
There’s no doubt that some of the richest genealogical information can come from monumental inscriptions (MIs) – and if you’re unsure why, I recommend reading Celia Heritage’s book Tracing Your Ancestors Through Death Records, published by Pen and Sword. By their nature, these memorials are fixed and often deteriorating to a point where they become unreadable, which makes preserving a record of them all the more crucial. There are a number of volunteer projects to record and transcribe memorials, including UKIndexer at ukindexer.co.uk/ – backed by The Genealogist – which offers credits and gift vouchers in exchange for contributions to its projects.
