My family tree in 1,000 words

Love to write up your family history but at a loss about where and how to begin? Susie Kearley set herself the challenge of penning her family history in exactly 1,000 words… and the results are warm and engaging. Read her story and see if you can do it too!

My family, clockwise from top: Mum and Dad at their 40th wedding anniversary, Dad’s parents John and Beatrice Edwards, the Edwards’ farm, my dad Norman, Mum’s parents Kenneth and Irene Thompson and, centre, Mum’s family at the seaside

When my dad started researching our family tree, it was a bit of a drag. As a young family we spent hours in graveyards looking for long-lost ancestors. My sisters and I were far more interested in spotting wildlife than in dead people, but many decades later, it turned out that dad had uncovered some pretty interesting stuff.

My dad’s father John, born in 1891, was a farmer by trade with a keen interest in engineering. He worked on the farm while his wife Beatrice made butter and sold it at the local market, as her mother had done before her. Beatrice’s parents couldn’t read or write. Her father was a joiner and Methodist preacher, and her mother looked after the house and milked the cows. In 1919 their son George returned home injured but alive after fighting in The Great War.
