This is the moment when Plymouthbased nutter/Granddad, Mike Grainger, who in his own words is ‘over 65 years young’, went through the timing beam on one wheel at over 215mph on his turbocharged Suzuki Hayabusa during the Straightliners Top Speed event at Elvington runway near York.
Mike, whose day job is the commercial director at GT Motorcycles in Plymouth, has form when it comes to high speed antics, having previously broken the UK and European land speed records in 1995 and 2012. In the world of going ridiculously fast too much is never enough, so Mike has recently upgraded his ’Busa, fitting a much larger Borg Warner turbo along with a charge cooler, which has increased the power output considerably. And here you can see the result – power wheelies at well over 200mph, breaking Ghostrider’s world record for the fastest pop-up wheelie in the process. Mike, along with many other riders, including current wheelie world record holder Gary Rothwell, can be seen at Straightliners events being run throughout the year.
