SUSPENSION: HOW TO CRACK THE MOTORCYCLING EQUIVALENT OF THE DA VINCI CODE!

We sent Pretty Boy back to school in order to try and master the elusive dark art of suspension…

PARKITT RACING SUSPENSION SEMINAR

SUSPENSION SEMINAR

No, he isn’t about to snog it…

I’m not sure about you, but even though I’ve been racing for almost ten years I’ve always been practically clueless about the real intricacies of suspension. Preload this, compression that… it’s something that I’ve always thought’s best left to the pros, who’ve then been forced to decipher my alien-like arm-waving feedback into genuine and positive suspension changes for faster lap-times. The truth of the matter is though, it would be a trillion times better if we understood how our pogos worked ourselves. Imagine you’re on a trackday, armed with the knowledge of how to improve your machine for the circuit you’re on – it would transform the rest of the day’s riding.

Well it got us thinking, here at Fast Bikes HQ, how on earth do we a) learn what all those complicated terms mean and b) understand how to use them to get the very best from our bikes? Then, almost like a blinding light from up above (or a Facebook ad, I can’t quite remember), a suspension seminar by the trusty lads at Parkitt Racing appeared, which included some brekkie on arrival, free tea and coffee and a day of learning with the informative Neil Parkhouse – a fully qualified suspension technician who has twice diploma’d at the Ohlins HQ in Sweden. Not bad for £65. So, with the aim of arming myself to the teeth with enough confidence to make my own suspension changes for life, I booked myself a slot… well, it’s about time I went back to school!
