The development of air rifles has progressed way beyond what any of us could have imagined not so many years ago. Equipment quite recently regarded as cutting-edge has quickly become standard, and the gear that now leads the way in terms of technological advancement looks and shoots like something from a sci-fi film. High-end modern airguns cost serious money but still remain surprisingly good value when you take into account the painstaking development that has been invested in them. These superguns boast features that not only make consistent accuracy easier to achieve, but are also a real pleasure to shoot. Flagship airguns aren’t for everyone, however, and they certainly aren’t the best choice for every shooter’s needs or budget. Thankfully, the technology used in them is cascading down into the more affordable lines. Mid-priced airguns with the power and precision to tackle live quarry humanely or with the refinement and finesse to take on serious competitive shooting are now comfortably within the reach of most people. The choice extends way beyond pre-charged airguns, and there are still plenty of shooters who would choose a spring or gas-ram rifle over a recoilless PCP. Apart from being more affordable, these guns tend to be simpler to use and maintain, and for many are much more fun to shoot. Airgun optics have come on in the same leaps and bounds as the rifles we clamp them onto, and the choice is equally wide.
