GET AHEAD: PLANT SCENTED DAFFODILS
The phrase ‘a host of golden daffodils’ refers to one of our favourite flowers, the wild lent lily of Wordsworth’s day. Back then, these small, pale daffodils grew everywhere, but their habitats began to decline in Victorian times and now you’re only likely to see them scattered about, particularly in the west. On the plus side, however, there’s an ever increasing range of wonderful shapes, colours and even scents to grow. It’s time to plant daffodils now, so they can spend the winter establishing. Many gardeners go for the same classic varieties, miniature yellow ‘Tête-à-tête’ or tall, large-flowered, golden ‘King Alfred’, but why not try something a little different? All daffodils are scented, but others smell much more sweetly than others. We’ve found some that will stop you in your tracks! Plant some of these in beds or pots near the house.
