Edmund White

Ask Edmund White if this is a good time for LGBT+ fiction and the revered writer declares: “I think there are a lot of good writers but not so many good readers.” With a sigh the prolific novelist, memoirist and biographer explains: “In the 50s, if you wanted to be gay and you lived in a big city, in order to have your ticket of admission into gay life, you had to like the opera and read lots of books, and you had to be cultured.”

Another sigh. “Now it seems you just have to go to the gym a lot.”

It’s interesting then that the 76-year-old’s brilliant new novel Our Young Man features a gay protagonist whose body and looks are more appealing to people around him than his brains – a French model named Guy who moves to 80s New York and, thanks to what seems like everlasting youth, has men falling head over heels for him.
