Daniel’s Final Gift

Actor Daniel Wiltshire was just 39 when he died suddenly of a brain haemorrhage in March 2014. But despite the shock of his death, mum Annie gave permission for her gay son’s organs to be donated to help save others. Now she’s started her own charity to encourage others to become donors, and to open up communication between gay couples and family members. She tells us why sexuality is no barrier when it comes to giving life after your death.

My son Dan had a huge personality. He was the life and soul of the party and the room lit up when he arrived. He was one of happiest, kindest, loveliest people you could meet. He almost sounds too good to be true, but he was all of those things – a really wonderful man.

He graduated from Guildford School of Acting and went on to work for a recruitment company, but had the flexibility to take time off for acting jobs. He did a lot of fringe stuff, but Shakespeare was his big love and he had parts in many productions over the years.

I’ve been single for most of my life, so along with Dan’s sister Cat, who’s also gay, we were a very close, tight-knit family. He also worked for me for a few years at my gift and coffee shop, so for a time, we were living and working together too.
