The beauty world’s most outrageous influencer gets real.

Bretman Rock speaks with an ever-present sassiness. “I love me as fuck,” he screams into the phone from his hotel room at the W Hollywood in Los Angeles, where he has been staying. Before I can respond, he adds, “You are what you believe. I believe that I’m the baaaaddest bitch, and I don’t care what anyone else thinks.” Rock and I are speaking over the phone from across the country, and even from hundreds of miles away, I can feel his self-assurance and positivity. I immediately decide that Rock could probably convince me to do anything. He is encouraging and witty. It’s hard not to wonder if he’s always been this confident, moving through the world with a deep understanding of who he is.

Rock’s large and loyal social following speaks for itself. At the age of nine, he was his mom for her email address so that he could make a MySpace page, and now at the age of 20 he is a prominent global beauty influencer. Although he got his start on Vine and YouTube, when we speak, Rock has over 12 million followers on Instagram, 833k followers on TikTok, 5 million YouTube subscribers to his channel, self-titled Bretman Rock, and a noticeable Snapchat and Twitter presence. The comments on all of his content are proof: People love Rock and really care about what he has to say.

About Gay Times

Over the next 3 months, Gay Times Magazine will be celebrating the very essence of Pride – featuring voices and experiences of the entire LGBTQ initialism from all over the world. In our first volume, covered by Billy Porter, Valentina and Bretman Rock, we’re looking at the fluidity our modern community enjoys. These are people who have either fought for, given visibility to, or celebrated their power to express themselves in the most authentic (and downright fierce) way possible. Not only that, but they do it unapologetically, and with two fingers up to the patriarchy that governs what is considered ‘normal’. We also have a special extended travel section on everything New York City World Pride, giving you insight into the great metropolis that witnessed the birth of Pride. What’s more, there are interviews with the team bringing Tales of the City back to Netflix, making sure the enduring spirit of the queer community is front and centre. Elsewhere in the issue Ryan Jamaal Swain talks Pose, privilege and Pride; L Devine on bringing her sexuality front and centre in her music; Dustin Lance Black on his lifetime of activism; Angele Anang on being the first openly trans winner of Drag Race; Ryan O’Connell on why disabled people shouldn’t be used as ‘inspiration porn; plus fashion, opinion and art from all over the world.
