THE IMPORTANCE OF NUTRITION

Fuel your training the smart way. Boost your performance and achieve your body goals, with the right recipes and advice from rugby superstar and bestselling author James Haskell and one of the UK’s top performance chefs and current England football chef, Omar Meziane.
Omar James

Let me be clear right now, I am not a qualified nutritionist, nor am I a registered dietitian.

However, throughout my rugby career I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the UK’s top sports nutrition experts, including performance nutritionist Matt Lovell, strength and conditioning expert Phil Learney and Dr Graeme Close, who is senior lecturer in sports nutrition at Liverpool John Moores University. The main lesson I’ve learned from them is that the basics are all you need to succeed.

And the basic rules of nutrition have not changed. Simply put, it comes down to calories in vs calories out.

CRAZY DIETS Remember that eating badly or trying stupid fad diets will only cause more problems in the long run.

You’re likely to get short-term results from most extreme dietary methods (juicing, Atkins, etc), but trust me, you will pay the price down the line. If you starve your body and later decide that, actually, you quite like food and probably need it to function, you will put the weight back on just as quickly as you lost it. On top of the return weight gain, you will find that your body fat percentage (those wobbly bits) has actually increased. Fat loss teas or pills, or lemon juice and cayennepepper shakes are not the answer.
