B ack when jazz was king, the rhythm guitar player was expected to sync with the upright bass, playing a relentless four beats to the bar. In the early days the guitars were still acoustic, and although archtop guitars project a strong midrange with, heavy strings, strong hands and an efficient technique were needed to see you through a gig. One common solution was to use three-note chord voicings, but as we will see, these voicings can also be very useful to rock and blues players today.
