Your letters. This month: A defence of the Silver Sky, memories of Duggie Lock and pickup artists…

Dear TGM, I’m a big John Mayer fan, and so I’ve been watching the furore online about the release of his PRS signature model with some interest, and I have to say, I really don’t understand what all the fuss is about?

There’s no getting away from the fact that the Silver Sky is guitar that’s been heavily inspired by the Strat… but what else were people expecting? Mayer has played Strats throughout his career. Okay his first PRS model was a very different kettle of fish, but that was for his Grateful Dead stuff, which obviously requires a different kind of guitar than his day-to-day stuff would.

Given that he continued to play his old Strats live and in the studio even after he began working with PRS, it was clear that there wasn’t a guitar in the company’s existing range that worked for him as well as a Strat, and so of course Paul Reed Smith and his designers are going to go out of their way to create a guitar for him that fulfilled his requirements – that’s surely the point of a signature model!
