Kurt Vile Bottle It In

Kurt Vile has always been an artist determined to do things his own way, and not worry about album sales or critical recognition. But his sixth album, 2015’s B’lieve I’m Goin Down brought him a great deal of both, in no small part due to the chart-topping success of the sublimely catchy Pretty Pimpin’. In crafting his follow-up, however, the Jaguar-loving Philidelphian hasn’t rushed things, instead recharging his energies with other projects, not least last year’s album with Courtney Barnett, Lotta Sea Lice, which found it onto scores of 2017 best-of lists. Bottle It In comes with a healthy dose of expectation, then – being described as “one of great contemporary American songwriters” will do that – but the former The War On Drugs guitarist has risen to it by creating perhaps his most interesting album yet.
