The first chord in figure 1 of this month’s column is a regular Am7 chord with an open A string in the bass. As usual, the chord is built in thirds – notes which are three steps apart. A is the root, C is the third (minor in this case) E is the fifth and G the minor seventh. These notes can also be thought of as notes from a scale – in fact there are three major scales in which these four notes occur; C major, F major and G major. For the sake of this exercise, let’s imagine they come from the G major scale, and we are going to move each note up the guitar to the next note of the scale. So A will become B, E will become F, C moves to D and G goes up two frets to A and we’ve arrived at the next chord in the example.
