Easy fitness for the holidays

Exercise may be low priority right now. Yet it’s what your body and mind are crying out for at this time of year, says Hannah Ebelthite – and not just to offset those mince pies. Here’s how to fit it in while making merry

HANDS-UP IF YOUR USUAL FITNESS routine has recently been abandoned in favour of ticking yet more items off your to-do list? With every minute accounted for, no one could blame you for dropping out of your conditioning class or giving your regular Saturday morning parkrun a miss. And soon, when the corks start popping and you finally start to unwind, it’ll probably feel easier just to leave it all until the new year.

Yet it’s at this time of year that we most benefit from keeping our bodies active. Not only is physical exercise a wonderful antidote to stress and anxiety, but it’s a valuable way to control hunger, boost your metabolism and help offset all those festive calories. The British Dietetic Association warns that it’s easy to consume an extra 500 calories a day over the Christmas and New Year period.
