CHICKEN, FISH AND MEAT AND VEGETABLES have been served up between two slices of bread for centuries, but it wasn’t until the 1800s that John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, had this tasty and convenient combination of ingredients named after him. The story goes that he asked his valet to put meat between bread to avoid interrupting his card games with a sit-down meal. When his friends were inspired to follow suit, they ordered ‘the same as Sandwich’.
