It’s easy to think of heart health as a mainly male concern. But keeping your heart healthy, whatever your age, is vital for all women. Of the 7 million people living with heart and circulatory disease in the UK today, 3.5 million are men and 3.5 million women. It’s the UK’s second biggest killer (after dementia), and doesn’t discriminate by sex.

Cardiovascular disease or CVD refers to all the diseases of the heart and circulation. It causes nearly 160,000 deaths a year in the UK, which is 26 per cent of the total. Coronary heart disease (CHD), the most common form of CVD, is when the coronary arteries that supply the heart muscle with oxygen become narrowed by atherosclerosis, a build-up of fatty plaques in the artery wall. CHD is the biggest cause of heart attack.
