WORDS FRANCESCA SPECTER
There’s no denying we’re in the middle of a waste-free revolution. We’ve all seen the newspaper spreads of litterstrewn beaches, recycling rates are up, and ‘single-use’ (as in plastics) was the Collins Dictionary word of the year for 2018. Meanwhile, 88 per cent of those who watched David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II – and, let’s face it, who didn’t? – said they changed their lifestyle as a result. Reducing our waste footprint on the planet has become a question of ‘how’ rather than ‘why’. But although we’ve all become pros at recycling our orange juice cartons, it seems we’ve been slower on the uptake when it comes to our bathroom cabinets. ‘While almost 90 per cent of people in the UK claim to regularly recycle from the kitchen, only 52 per cent say they do the same in the bathroom’, says William Brightman, co-founder of sustainable beauty brand UpCircle (upcirclebeauty.com).
