Calendula

What is it? Extracted from the marigold flower, healing calendula has been used for thousands of years in Indian, Arabic and Greek medicine, and earned the nickname ‘Russian penicillin’ thanks to the vast quantities grown there. Tinctures are made directly from the plant, or petals are infused in a carrier oil.

Why we love it… It’s the perfect blend of gentle yet powerful. ‘Calendula has an antiseptic, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory action,’ says Claire Hattersley, head gardener at Weleda

UK. ‘Yet it’s gentle enough to be included in products for babies and people with skin complaints such as eczema.’ High concentrations of linoleic acid help soothe damaged or inflamed skin, while antioxidants neutralise free radicals. Plus, it can hydrate and support the skin barrier. No wonder it’s used widely in creams, oils, ointments, lotions, soaps, shampoos and even toothpastes. ‘Calendula extract is also sometimes prescribed to relieve muscular tension and spasm such as cramp, or for menstrual complaints,’ says Hattersley.
