When you catch that first glimpse of blue as you are approaching the sea, it can make you smile, or take a slightly deeper breath, or want to quicken your pace in the anticipation of inhaling the ocean air. The great vastness of the oceans, which cover 71 per cent of the Earth’s surface, contain 97 per cent of its water and constitute 99 per cent of its living space, are a source of fascination, intrigue, beauty and unparalleled life.
Those of us lucky enough to spend time in nature have a sense that it is good for us, and there is growing scientific interest in the benefits nature can provide through its positive effects on physical fitness and mental health. Around 40 per cent of the world’s population lives within about 60 miles of the coast, and 23 of the world’s 30 largest cities are located on the coast.
