As the independence movement began to find new growth, our wee band of activists in Dundee wanted to do something differently. We wanted to build something that created an excitement and genuine hope for independence. And we were as tired of the old politics as everyone else seems to be. So we set up an off-shoot group – Imagine Indy – with the idea that the independence movement comes with colour and vibrancy.
Imagine Lochee was our second big event. Lochee sits to the West of the City. Historically it is a village by itself, with a strong jute mill tradition and an equally strong Irish past. Unfortunately, it now has some of the highest poverty levels in the city and its high street is becoming increasingly derelict as the local stores become gobbled up by the big national stores nearby. It didn’t stop the generosity of the owners though, when we went looking for donations for our Imagine Lochee Festival.
