Sometimes you buy a book, and it’s just the start of a spending spree that can send your bank account, or under-the-bed stash of used fivers, spiralling into vacuity or negativity. That book begets other books, records, desirable items or substances. For example, I’ve just finished reading Mike Wade’s biography (and I’ll need a deep breath for the title) Hole in My Pocket: The True Legend of Mickey Jupp, The Rock’n’Roll Genius Who Refused To Be a Star. Completing it has involved the purchase of several CDs, including an expensive box set, and two other books, one a selfpublished memoir by the obscure Southend musician John Bobin (an even worse title than Mike’s otherwise excellent book; it’s called Bark Staving Ronkers) the other being Sylvia Patterson’s I’m Not With The Band, which looks great but its currently being usurped by Don Winslow’s ferocious The Cartel.
