Are Statins Over-Stated?

CONTRARY to its public profile we cannot live without cholesterol. It is an essential component of every cell membrane, where it acts to build and maintain the membrane, and it is the principal precursor of other essential hormones and vitamins including cortisol, testosterone, oestrogen, and vitamin D.

Cholesterol itself does not dissolve well in water. In order to be transported in the bloodstream it has to be enclosed in chemical structures which are water soluble. These structures are known as lipoproteins and they come in four variations based on their density. The least dense are known as chylomicrons. Then there are very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high density lipoproteins (HDL). Added together the cholesterol in these various lipoproteins is referred to as the total cholesterol (TC).
