The nautical nomad…

In this latest instalment of our occasional series, iScot Magazine reader Bob Costello shares part of his travel diary, reflecting on the challenges, and triumphs, of a man of a certain age holidaying solo…

When we last heard from Bob, he was continuing his tour of Iceland…

WEL, HERE I am in Reykjavik, the capital city of Iceland – and what an impressive capital city it is! It’s about 3 miles from the cruise terminal so, after taking a shuttle to get there in the morning, I spent the rest of the day wandering around and taking in the sights. I was particularly impressed by its Opera House, Harpa, but had no explanation for the statue of a figure with half his body encased in rock – I wondered if it was meant to depict the Icelandic banking industry being complicit in the financial crash of 2008? (You may remember the actions of the Icelandic Government after the banking crisis, when they jailed the bankers and bailed out the people?) The truth was less exciting however, as one of my friends later explained that it is merely a depiction of a faceless civil service employee, The Unknown Bureaucrat. (Ed’s note: Ach well, never mind Bob – to paraphrase Degas, art is not what the artist sees, but what the artist makes others see!)
