Talking Tech

In one of my very first Talking Tech articles, I mentioned an app called Welcome. The idea behind this app is that a disabled person can register their details, including information on their disability and what sort of assistance they require. When they visit a venue which has joined the Welcome network, be it a shop, restaurant or leisure facility, they log in, alert the venue of their estimated time of arrival, and the staff are ready and waiting for them, already knowing what they look like and how best to interact with them.

I love the idea of Welcome but the truth is I’d never actually used it myself even though I signed up for it ages ago. This is because I usually go out and about with a sighted guide, so I haven’t felt I’ve needed the app.

Still, I thought it was about time I tried Welcome for myself, and what better place to start than by visiting the premises of Neatebox, the Scottish Company set up by Gavin Neate to develop and market the app. This would give me a chance to learn more about Welcome, as well as trying the app for myself.

Having arranged a meeting with Gavin, I logged in to the app on my phone and tried to set up the Welcome facility. The app was accessible with my screen reader, and even though I’d never used it before, it didn’t take me long to complete the details of my visit, why I was visiting and what assistance I would need. A short while after submitting the request, I received an email confirmation that Neatebox knew when I was coming. So far, so good.
