For the independence movement 2020 is already shaping up to be the busiest year since 2014 and we’ve not even reached the end of the first quarter. New pro-independence parties are shooting out of the fertile ground like mushrooms, Scotland’s only crowdfunded, non-partisan leftleaning think tank Common Weal is gaining traction for their Green New Deal Plan (‘Our Common Home’), a former SNP deputy leader seeking to end his retirement and an influential standing SNP MP are both seeking to contest Ruth Davidson’s Central Edinburgh MSP seat in 2021, and flurry of activity is erupting around the YES groups and National Yes registry, behind the backdoors of the grassroots Scotland is buzzing!

You might be forgiven for thinking an actual, official campaign for Independence is already in full swing but this flurry of activity isn’t down to the sayso of the SNP following the announcement of a clear path to independence nor is it prompted by the publication of an engaging, constructive White Paper from the Scottish government as announced in September 2019: Scotland’s political scene is jumping into action not in spite but because of the absence of either.
