An iScot Short Story

THE USHER HALL is well-filled, despite the £100 ticket price. For security reasons, only the stalls are in use. At the sides and rear muscular men in dark glasses and shaven heads survey the audience, fixing anyone who dares to glance at them with a menacing stare.

On stage, ex-prime minister Geoffrey Leacher is launching the third volume of his memoirs, The Challenge of Statecraft. The auditorium darkens. Spotlights focus on the man himself. He lounges in an armchair, looking as youthful as ever, the gleam on his cheeks from the latest bout of cosmetic surgery artfully dulled by his make-up team. Behind him, on the big screen, the huge monochrome close-up of his face looms over the proceedings like a divine presence. A single copy of the three-inch-thick hardback sits on the coffee-table between the great man and his interviewer, BBC presenter Evie Fowle.
