IN EVERY conflict truth is always the first casualty. Once again Britain has donned the mantle of factor to the self-appointed international moral arbiter and has faithfully followed Uncle Sam on the warpath into Syria. Theresa May could find “no alternative” but to send British jets to join US-led airstrikes against Syrian targets, and she made this decision – breaking an established precedent – without first consulting parliament. Britain’s truth – the pretext peddled by the right-wing media on both sides of the Atlantic – was that Bashar al-Assad had deployed chemical weapons against his own people.
