Protecting Vulnerable Adults

SELDOM does a week go by without the media reporting on the latest scandal about the abuse or neglect of vulnerable children. But people don’t stop being vulnerable just because they have passed their 18th birthday. Yet the neglect and abuse of vulnerable adults rarely makes the headlines.

Adults can be vulnerable as a result of underlying medical issues. For example, research has shown that deaf adults suffer poorer health, poorer literacy and lower social economic status. In addition they have a higher incidence of obesity and hypertension (both of which increase their risk of cardiovascular disease) and of depression (which increases their risk of social isolation). But at the same time they are less likely to be able to access the health and social care services that they need, often as a result of significant communication difficulties.
