Harness the power of the sun to create an effective watering system. Ben Russell explains what’s involved
Microporous hoses deliver water along rows of vegetables

Polytunnels and greenhouses are terrific assets, boosting temperatures and providing a sheltered environment for plants and for gardeners! Undercover growers get earlier crops and higher yields, and work when it suits them, whatever the weather is doing outside. However, growing undercover can also tie gardeners down to an unforgiving watering routine. And anyone who neglects this critical task will suffer withering plants and reduced yields.

Automated watering can reduce the chore of watering and prevent the soil ever drying out. And, if set up well, it can cover for you while you are away on holiday.

The simplest solution for automatic watering is a timer-valve attached to a mains water supply, and the delivery infrastructure to get the optimal amount of water to the plants. However, if you prefer to use rainwater for your watering or have an allotment with no mains supply, a solar-powered system is the answer. Several companies provide complete kits that pump water from a water butt or hook up to a hose, and anyone with a little electrical and plumbing competence could put a handy system together. We’ll take a look at both approaches here.
