The humble potato is an awesome crop, producing hefty hauls of tubers suitable for any number of culinary uses. Growing them is a given, but for many gardeners the best way to store them is less clear. Benedict Vanheems shares some advice on keeping potatoes safely stashed

Who doesn’t love a tasty, nourishing tater! Whether chipped, mashed, boiled, baked or smothered in mayonnaise, the humble potato is a superstar crop – a British number one thanks to its easy-growing habit and generous harvests.

Home-grown spuds don’t last long in our household. Digging them up is a truly momentous occasion. It’s a job for which I enroll my enthusiastic five-year-old daughter, who scrabbles around in the freshly lifted soil like an excited puppy, picking out the spoils ready for cooking in a twist of the oven dial!

Potatoes are very forgiving, which is why they are so often recommended as a good crop for beginners. The combination of earthing up and rambunctious foliage leaves little room for weeds, while at peak growth you can almost see the plants growing. Good ground preparation and a little water in dry weather is all it takes to keep them happy and you in lots – and lots – of tubers.
