The village produce show is a delightful soiree in the British summer calendar but behind the scenes of fluffy cakes and carrots and jolly camaraderie something more sinister lurks, as Emma Rawlings explains

The village produce show really brings to mind a warm summer’s day with a marquee on the local cricket ground. Villagers bringing paper plates of home-grown tomatoes, knitted crafts and Victoria sponges. Everyone jolly and having a spiffing time drinking tea and eating WI cakes. Children running round diving under colourful bunting, pinching cakes and admiring their garden on a plate and painted eggs.
