Having decided to grow your own food, it’s natural to picture an allotment or a patch in the garden. Yet with so many people strapped for time and a suitable space in the garden, it’s great to know that you can grow some of the most nutritious crops all year round in the comfort of your own home.

Of course, we are not talking about vast numbers here, although with a small greenhouse or polytunnel – even a mini greenhouse or cold frame – you can seriously up your game, but with no more than a few windowsills and a bit of careful planning you can grow enough fresh leaves for a family of four to have a few every day in a healthy salad, sandwich or stir-fry.
