A traveller should always learn a few phrases of the local language. It shows willing – tells people you’re not just using their country as a tourist destination, but that you’re actually interested. speak Arabic and I’m learning one of the Berber languages, and I couldn’t have been given a warmer welcome.
The culture of hospitality in Morocco is overwhelming. Here, guests are from God: if one arrives, that’s a great day. People go to such lengths to help you, and there’s no question of you intruding or being a stranger. It’s like, ‘Get the best china out! Go kill the goat!’ It’s all given with such an open heart that it humbles me every time.
