A two-bedroom sea-view apartment at Artist Residence hotel;
Once infamous for pirates, Penzance should today be better known for artists. This most westerly English town has seen a smattering of galleries open in the last decade, as well as the nearby Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens. And the recent £3m refurbishment of Art Deco lido the Jubilee Pool means it’s once again possible to dive into a design masterpiece. Located on historic Chapel Street, alongside boutiques, antique shops and architectural curiosities, including the 19th-century Egyptian House, the Artist Residence makes a great base for exploring. Individually decorated by local artists, rooms in this listed Georgian building feature graphic prints, playful pops of colour, wall murals and, in some cases, sea views. The restaurant specialises in local seafood and smokehouse dishes, such as hake with samphire tempura, or whiskey-gravy short ribs, while Cornish wines and juices are served in the alfresco bar – a perfect spot to while away long summer nights.
