PHOTOGRAPH: THE PIAZZA DUOMO FROM THE ARENGARIO BALCONY OF THE PALAZZO DELL’ARENGARIO, MUSEO DEL 900, MILAN, ITALY BY ITALO ROTA AND FABIO FORNASARI. PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARCO TAGLIARINO
Bringing out the character of a building – whether ornate or austere – is as particular a challenge for photographers as taking a great human portrait. You can see some prize examples among the 20 shortlisted entries at the Architectural Photography Awards 2018, being held in conjunction with the World Architecture Festival in Amsterdam on 28–30 November. This image by Marco Tagliarino, in the Sense of Place category, shows Milan’s Gothic cathedral reflected in the interior of the Palazzo dell’Arengario – an Italian Fascist-era building later remodelled to house the Museo del Novecento, which displays an impressive collection of 20th-century art.
