Once this district was most famous for its orchards, but now its vines have top billing, and it has become NZ’s second-largest wine-producing region. Expect excellent Bordeaux-style reds, syrah and chardonnay. Be sure to drop in at Black Barn Vineyards for its fagship chardonnay, and Mission Estate, to see the country’s oldest winery, dating back to 1851.
