New York’s Whitney Museums reopens

The new in New York

One of the big three modern art galleries in Manhattan, along with MoMA and the Guggenheim, the Whitney Museum of American Art has built up a collection that charts the 20th and 21st centuries through such works as Jasper Johns’ Three Flags, Mark Rothko’s Four Darks in Red and Georgia O’Keeffe’s Summer Days. Finding itself short of space after nearly 50 years based in a stark building on Madison Avenue, the Whitney has packed its bags and moved to new digs in the Meatpacking District, near the Hudson River and the southern end of the High Line park. Renzo Piano’s spacious design gives two foors over to the permanent collection, while the frst of the temporary shows in the new building, America is Hard to See, takes a fresh look at the art of the ‘American century’.
