The View

The sun is setting over Nyhavn, Copenhagen’s most famous canal, the bright gabled buildings gradually taking on a golden hue. The cobbled street is busy with people enjoying an alfresco drink under leaning umbrellas, and a group of students sits on the quayside, legs dangling, discussing what they’ve seen at the Denmark Design Museum, just a short stroll away. Built in the 17th century to link the harbour to the city centre, the canal was once a thriving commercial port and red-light district, but now bars and restaurants occupy the former houses, their tables and chairs spilling out onto the pedestrianised harbourfront.

A wander along the promenade reveals not one but three former homes of the Danish storyteller Hans Christian Andersen – he lived variously at numbers 20, 18 and 67. Celebrate the Hans hat-trick with a Mikkeller craft beer, best enjoyed while watching the tethered sailing boats bob gently in the canal.
