The 70s, 80s and 90s saw some of our most beloved artists coming from humble backgrounds – Pixies, Nirvana, Joy Division and the Happy Mondays, to name a few. Today, many bands are from far more afluent financial circumstances, as they’re often the ones who can afford to pursue music as a career. Th result? A paucity of artists from more modest backgrounds to tackle the issues facing the majority of listeners, in the tradition of icons from past generations.
