Mott The Hoople’s Ian Hunter joins Bowie on stage

Black Tie White Noise came loaded with a weight of hype and expectation. The first David Bowie LP, rather than Tin Machine, in six years, it also marked the return of several important players from his history. Nile Rodgers was back to produce, sparking rumours that this would be a ‘proper’ Let’s Dance sequel. Back on piano was Mike Garson, appearing for the first time since Young Americans, a reunion that would continue, on and off, all the way to Reality and Bowie’s final tour. Most touchingly, the album saw Bowie and Mick Ronson record together for the first time since Pin Ups. The pair had already renewed their friendship and remained close until Ronson’s passing in April 1993 - just a few weeks after the album’s release.
