Richard Hawley & Ollie Trevers
FUNNY COW OST
LAUGHING GIRL
Wyndham Wallace
It’s hard to mix music and comedy. Fortunately, while Richard Hawley may possess a fine sense of humour – as attendees of his shows will confirm – he aims exclusively for the heart on this soundtrack to Adrian Shergold’s wellreceived film. Given his tender croon and willingness to take things slow, it’ll come as no surprise he strikes his target repeatedly: Hawley’s a man who can imbue even a potentially dubious endearment like ‘funny cow’ with the requisite affection. The title track, with its trembling opening guitar chords further underlined by quietly fluttering strings, is typical of the album’s tone, and Hawley’s matched perfectly with Corinne Bailey Rae on I Still Want You, while the instrumental Leaving Mikes House boasts the warmth of a 1970s Hovis ad. Contributions from newcomer Ollie Trevers, who sounds like Midge Ure on From Then Til Now, are slightly less seductive, but overall, this is lovely stuff. No joke.
