Surprise Inside Cakes

Posted Sunday, April 26, 2015   |   1436 views   |   Family & Home   |   Comments (0) With the explosion in interest in decorating cakes over the past few years, it is not surprising that some bright spark suddenly looked at ways of decorating under the icing and inside the cake itself.

It’s a fun way to add a new dimension to any type of celebration. As the hidden surprise doesn’t reveal itself until the cake is cut, cakes with coloured centres are popular for baby showers revealing pink centres if the baby is a girl and blue for a boy. There are many ways to add a surprise inside your cake.
You can double bake cake and even bake cakes with biscuits or cookies inside. You can use food colour to colour your batter before baking or even cut a hollow in the centre and fill it with sweets. On the following pages there are some suggestions but there are many other ideas and we would love to see photos of your 'surprise inside' cakes.

Polka Dot Cake
This uses a cake pop mould to create perfect spheres but you could create a similar effect using cubes of cut up cake instead.

1. Spoon some plain cake mix into the pop tray. Put the cover on top and bake for about 20 minutes at 180?C/350?F/Gas 4.

2. Remove from the pop tray. Wash the tray and bake a batch of chocolate cake pops.
3. Cover the base of a lined cake tin with chocolate cake batter and arrange the plain pops in the mixture.

4. Cover with chocolate batter and bake for about 45 minutes or until the cake is cooked through. Bake a second cake using chocolate pops and plain cake mix. When cool, sandwich both cakes together with jam or buttercream and decorate.
