Triple Olympic gold medallist Tom Dean MBE trains six days a week, covering around 3.5 million metres a year in the water. He shares the lessons that keep him afloat
Specialising in the 200m freestyle (both individual and relay), the 25-year-old multiple world champion was brought up in the Berkshire town of Maidenhead where, as a kid, he regularly used to swim in the Thames. Standing 6ft 5in, he has an arm span of 6ft 8in and size 13 feet. He is an ambassador for Omega watches.
We spend four hours a day in the pool, covering anywhere from 10,000m to 14,000m. Our Olympic pool has 14 cameras along one wall and cameras in the ceiling, which we use for technical analysis. There’s also an hour and a half in the gym doing core work, mobility, shoulder and hip robustness and Pilates. My coach for the past seven years has been David McNulty, Olympic swimming coach. I also have an assistant coach, a biomechanist, a nutritionist, a lead physio, a soft tissue therapist and a sports psychologist.
