Strength is... HOLDING ON
THE CLIMBER
TOMMY CALDWELL
Caldwell needs to look ‘more like a spider than a gorilla’ for his peak strength-to-weight ratio
MOST PEOPLE DON’T think about their grip strength until they need it: say, opening a stiff jar, or trying to carry all your shopping bags from the car to the kitchen in one trip. Unless, that is, you’re a rock climber like Tommy Caldwell, whose hand and forearm muscles quite literally keep him alive. Which is why an accident in 2001, in which Caldwell accidentally cut off half of his left index finger with a table saw, left some of his peers uncertain he’d ever be able to climb at a high level again. But Caldwell was determined. He’d go on to complete a 19-day, 2,500ft free-climb ascent of one of the world’s most challenging climbs, the Dawn Wall of El Capitan. And he credits his hand strength with getting him to the top.
