The American author Helen Keller once stated: “Life is a either a daring adventure or nothing at all.”
I’d argue that you could substitute the word “life” for “running”. Think back on your highlights as a runner: my bet is that many of them will have come during some kind of adventure.
Maybe it was that easy five-miler that somehow turned into an epic 10-mile cross-country run. Or that time you got lost on the top of the mountain but somehow found your way home. Whatever it is, the rugged joys of an outdoor adventure are one of life’s – and running’s – big appeals.
This job has afforded me the opportunity to go on plenty of running adventures, including racing a steam engine over 14 miles (I won, narrowly) and a horse over 24 miles (I lost, comfortably). But you don’t have to travel to the ends of the earth to find an adventure (although, by all means, be my guest). Adventure is a mindset, not a destination.
On page 52, serial adventurer Tobias Mews talks about three of his favourite running adventures in the UK, from the beginner-friendly to the brutally tough.
