MAKE YOUR CLOTHING WORK AS HARD AS YOU DO BY UNDERSTANDING THE WAY IT FUNCTIONS ALONG WITH HOW TO WEAR IT FOR MAXIMUM EFFECT.

RUNNING FABRICS

While it’s tempting to pull on a pair of joggers and a commemorative 10K t-shirt when you head out running, not only will you risk looking a mess but you’ll be missing out on a wealth of technical cleverness that can help you stay comfortable and perform efficiently.

Aside from preventing nakedness, at its most basic clothing keeps you warm by trapping the heat your body produces against the skin. The thicker the fabric and the tighter the weave of its fibers the more pronounced this effect becomes. However, when we exercise our bodies don’t just produce heat, they also produce sweat, and lots of it. The average person can push out up to a litre and a half of it every hour. Imagine how heavy and uncomfortable that would feel if it stayed saturated in your clothing. One of the key roles of technical sports clothing is therefore to transport sweat away from your skin and into the atmosphere.

Be cool

We sweat to keep cool. When your body heats up, the hypothalamus – the part of the brain responsible for thermoregulation – causes glands in the skin to release sweat. As this evaporates it carries away heat, lowering your temperature. Because sweat that drips off us is less efficient at cooling us down, by helping it evaporate quickly baselayers can actually help us stay cool.
