I cycled from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise awareness

Hope Virgo reflects on her endurance adventure to help raise awareness of mental health issues

I still can’t believe I did it! I cycled 1,147 miles over 14 days while stopping along the way to talk in schools and hospitals. But why did I feel the need to cycle for mental health education?

I developed anorexia when I was 13 years old, becoming the master of deception. I was fantastic at it.

I hid everything from everyone. It became like this dirty secret and something that I longed for. I got so much value out of it, and this sense of constant achievement.

I was so pleased with myself – I had learnt how to switch off all emotions and where I could get this amazing value from. As this friendship deepened I got happier and felt more content with life. And I thought it was going to be like this forever.

I was convinced that anorexia was the best way to live my life and I wasn’t going to let anyone else tell me differently!
