There’s something about winter, especially in the early part of the year, that
seems to make people think that they need to suffer. Cyclists call this suffering ‘training’. Maybe it’s guilt accumulated over an indulgent Christmas period, forcing its way out of the body as sweaty and sorry penance, a month-long binge of abstinence and exercise to help beat the body into some kind of shape for the rest of the year, or until the end of January at least. While most of us are happy to ride within our comfort zones, most of the time, it is in taking the occasional risk, that can reap the greatest rewards.
