He’s the man who revolutionised modern film scores…

WELCOME

…with a creative approach to to music-making, sonic experimentation and sound utilisation that helps some of the biggest directors to tell their stories. This month we’re overwhelmingly honoured to speak to one of the greatest composers on the planet: Hans Zimmer. In our ten-page interview (p14) we talk to Hans about his recent work with Spitfire Audio – co-creating a remarkable assortment of production and studio tools – as well as his incredible career, soundtracking such cinematic milestones as Rain Man, The Lion King and Gladiator, and,of course, his wonderful work with Christopher Nolan on modern classics such as Inception, Interstellar, The Dark Knight trilogy and Dunkirk. Throughout our conversation, Hans revealed an artistic philosophy built around innovation: always pushing himself and his creative collaborators to go beyond their comfort zones - striving to achieve what hasn’t been done before. It’s an attitude that has yielded some of the most fascinatingly intricate, beautifully resonant and critically revered soundtracks of the last four decades. Elsewhere this issue, Dave Gale takes us through the legacy of the vocoder (p26), we report on this year’s Superbooth show in Berlin (p8) and speak to its progenitor Andreas Schneider (p106) about his views on modular synthesis and its integral place in the music technology world. We’ve also got our usual tutorials, tips and reviews. Enjoy the issue!
